SINOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

One hundred years of Argentine music is a map that contains both «classic» and «popular» sites, also indicating the routes «sometimes very busy» that connect with each other. This dichotomy, which has weakened without disappearing altogether, had a decisive importance in the cultural history of the West, at least until the decade of the 60s. They are not completely autonomous spheres nor do they form a binary opposition: the popular is not the opposite of the classic. Argentina, due to the characteristics of its social history, has been a privileged scenario of situations of permeability between musical writing and orality but, even so, the tensions that crossed the world of culture throughout the first half of the 20th century reinforced the polarization between classical music and popular music.
The nationalist composers of the centennial set their sights on the Pampean horizon, convinced that Argentinean music could only emerge from the “criollo” and rural heritage, while the city of Buenos Aires boiled with immigrant music and the tango imposed its rhythm downtown and on the “conventillos”. From then until today, that ambition to achieve «an Argentine music» has gone through different formulations, which force us to think in plural: in recent years, with the massively accepted national rock, the tango in rejoiced revival, the folklore stripped of its telluric woes and the cumbia marking the rhythm of the popular sectors, it does not make much sense to discuss where the Argentine musical thing happens. It is everywhere, albeit with different intensities. But the triumph of Argentine music did not arrive magically; it left behind a history of disputes over the recognition of different codified traditions, which are nothing other than different ways of living and expressing an identity. At the end of a long road, today it is possible to say that few things represent the plural and mestizo Argentina of the Bicentennial like music. An Argentina that ended up being all its music.
